3.0 EcoDiesel (VM Motori) Common Problems

18 Jun 2026

The 3.0 EcoDiesel V6, built by VM Motori, gives the Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 strong torque and economy. It is sensitive around its emissions and cooling hardware, so here is what to keep an eye on.

Emissions and EGR

The emissions system is the usual trouble spot. EGR coolers, sensors and the wider after-treatment system can give problems, and the engine has been subject to emissions-related recalls and updates. Short trips and town-only driving make it worse, because the system never gets the sustained heat it needs to stay clean.

Cooling and oil cooler

The EcoDiesel leans hard on its cooling and oil-cooling circuits. These are worth inspecting as the engine ages, since heat is what kills diesels.

Fuel system and filtration

Clean fuel and good filtration matter on the high-pressure common-rail system. Stick to the fuel filter and water-separator change intervals and use good quality diesel. Neglected filtration is an expensive way to damage injectors and the pump.

Maintenance

  • Change the diesel fuel filter and water separator on schedule.
  • Use the correct DEF and keep the emissions system healthy.
  • Give the engine regular longer runs to keep the exhaust and emissions system clean.
